Website checklist: 7 things your website needs to convert

As a branding and Squarespace website designer, I know that January means ‘new year new me’ and also a kick up the arse for any business owners with sub-par branding and websites. It’s so tempting to DIY your branding and website designs as the price tag of a professional designer can be daunting. However, if you don’t do it right then your website can actually have a negative effect and be turning your customers away.

Here are my 7 absolute website must-haves to increase your conversion rate:

1. Utilise the golden space

The first on my list is to make it clear exactly what you do. The very top of your website/ above the fold / the golden space is the space every visitor will see without having to scroll anywhere or click anything. This is your make-or-break chance to tell people what you do and to persuade them to keep scrolling.

2. Clear branding

Before you even think about creating a website, you must have branding. If you are a small start up and can’t afford an all singing all dancing branding package from that lovely designer you follow on instagram - don’t worry, the basics will do for now.

3. Consistency

Following on from the point above - BE CONSISTENT! There’s no point having fabulous branding if it is not shown consistently throughout your site. Pick a colour palette, header font, body font and stick to them! No varying font sizes either!

4. Build Trust

To really connect with your visitors and potential customers, you want them to be able to trust you and therefore, value what you have to offer. To do this, you need to have photos of yourself on the homepage, testimonials from previous clients and a bit of personality in there too.

5. Call To Action

So you’ve probably seen this term absolutely everywhere, and rightly so. You get to be really bossy with call to actions (which I love). Keep telling your website visitors what you want them to do next and guide them through your site.

6. No Bulk Text

I’ll save you the hassle now. No one will read it. No one. How many times have you gone onto a website and thought to yourself ‘Ah, lovely. A huge f*ck off page of writing.’ I'll tell you - never.

7. SEO

What a shame it would be if you made it through all of my steps above but forgot this final (and critical) step. You want people to be able to find your wonderful website, and this is where SEO comes in. Long story short - you want your keywords/phrases. These need to be researched to make sure they get plenty of traffic. They need to be relevant and specific to what you do and they need to be abundant throughout your website. Sprinkle them everywhere.
